Did You know that George Bertwell bought the CAMDRIVE 500 PSRU for his Fighter Escort Wing Mustang?
The CAMDRIVE 500 Propeller Speed Reduction Unit is a key part of the power train for the Fighter Escort Wing's Mustang. As anyone who knows George will tell you, he does not make decisions on major components without carefully evaluating the alternatives. After an exhaustive study of available units, George purchased the first production unit of the CAMDRIVE 500 PSRU based on the results of preliminary Dyno testing.
"It looks just great!" said George - and here
are some of the reasons he opted for the
Firewall Forward PSRU for his
450 hp Chevrolet powered Fighter Escort Wing Mustang.
He knew the people at
Firewall Forward had been working
with a variety of PSRU's over a period of years, for customers in the high
performance field. He knew they were not comfortable with the overall
performance of any of the units on the market and had eventually come to
the conclusion that they would be better off if they designed their own.
This would give them the opportunity to incorporate all the features
on their PSRU wish list.
One of the reasons the unit looks so good is
that most of the external oil lines have been replaced by internal oil galleries.
Lubrication is by dry sump system, making it completely independent of the
engines lubrication system. Another departure from the norm is that the gear
case is cut, not cast, from 6061 T-6 billet stock by a CNC machine. Billet
stock allows the engineer to make precise load carrying capability calculations
not possible with castings. It also reduces the weight and provides maximum
structural integrity to overcome gyroscopic precession
forces.
